Embarking on this pilgrimage to Mount Kailash in the auspicious Year of the Horse is a once-in-a-lifetime spiritual opportunity. This is your year for profound acceleration and liberation.
Here are the transformative benefits you will receive:

✨ Forge Heart-Centered, Global Connections: Immerse yourself in an intimate, high-frequency community of like-minded seekers. This curated group provides a powerful container for mutual support, shared growth, and lifelong bonds.

Mountain Kailash
Known in Tibetan as the "Mountain of the Deities," and in Sanskrit as "the Heaven of Shiva" (Shiva being one of the principal deities of Hinduism), Mount Kailash is also the birthplace of the indigenous Tibetan religion—Yungdrung Bon.
Pilgrims believe that circling the mountain once can purify the sins of a lifetime; completing ten circuits spares one from the torments of hell through 500 reincarnations; while one hundred circuits enable attainment of Buddhahood and ascension to heaven in this very life. Moreover, performing the kora during the Horse Year—the year of Shakyamuni Buddha’s birth—multiplies the merit earned by twelvefold, equivalent to the blessings of thirteen circuits in an ordinary year.
The pilgrimage route spans 54 kilometers, with altitudes ranging from 4,600 meters to 5,080 meters. Pilgrims traverse the path on foot or by performing full-body prostrations. While the fastest can complete the journey in a single day by walking day and night, most take two to three days to finish one round.
Notably, followers of the Bon religion circle the mountain in the opposite direction—counterclockwise—compared to Tibetan Buddhists, who move clockwise. Bon, often referred to as the "Black Religion," is an ancient indigenous faith that first flourished in the Ngari region. It venerates deities and spirits of heaven, earth, mountains, forests, and waters, emphasizing rituals such as offerings, spirit dances, divination, and exorcism.
Mount Kailash (also known as Kang Rinpoche) is not famous for being the tallest mountain, but for being the most sacred. It is considered the spiritual center of the universe for four major religions:
Hinduism: Believed to be the abode of Lord Shiva, the god of destruction and regeneration. It is seen as a giant lingam (a pillar of cosmic light) where Shiva resides in eternal meditation with his consort, Parvati.
Buddhism: Known as Kang Rinpoche ("Precious Snow Mountain"), it is considered the home of the Buddha Demchok (Chakrasamvara), who represents supreme bliss. It is a central site of pilgrimage symbolizing enlightenment.
Jainism: Known as Ashtapada, it is believed to be the site where the first Tirthankara (spiritual teacher), Rishabhadeva, attained liberation (moksha).
Bon Religion: The ancient, pre-Buddhist religion of Tibet considers Kailash the soul of the entire region and the site where its founder, Tonpa Shenrab, descended from heaven.
Key Facts and Mysteries
Location: Remote southwestern Tibet, in the Ngari Prefecture.
Height: 6,638 meters (21,778 feet).
The Ultimate Taboo: An Unclimbed SummitNo human has ever summited Mount Kailash. This is not due to technical impossibility, but out of deep respect for its sanctity. Climbing it is considered a profound act of desecration. The only person credited with reaching its summit is the Tibetan yogi Milarepa, who did so through spiritual power in the 11th century.
The Pilgrimage (Kora/Parikrama)The primary act of devotion is to walk a 54 km (32 mi) circuit around the base of the mountain. This journey is called a Kora.
Completing one kora is believed to wipe away the sins of a lifetime.
Completing 108 koras is said to lead to enlightenment.
The trek involves crossing the high-altitude Dolma La Pass (5,636 m / 18,490 ft) and is a test of both physical and spiritual endurance.
The Source of Great RiversFour of Asia's most important rivers originate from the four directions of Mount Kailash, making it a hydrological apex:
North: The Indus
South: The Karnali (a major tributary of the Ganges)
East: The Yarlung Tsangpo (which becomes the Brahmaputra)
West: The Sutlej
Geographical Wonders
Distinct Shape: It is a uniquely symmetrical, four-sided peak, often described as a "cosmic pyramid."
The Swastika: Its southern face features a deep, vertical gash, which, combined with horizontal ridges, creates a natural swastika symbol—an ancient sign of auspiciousness in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism.
The Twin Lakes: At its base lie two lakes:
Lake Manasarovar (round, freshwater): Symbolizes light and purity.
Lake Rakshas Tal (crescent-shaped, saltwater): Symbolizes darkness.
Why is it Considered "Mysterious"?
Several unusual phenomena contribute to its mystical reputation:
Rapid Aging: Some visitors report that their hair and fingernails grow much faster than usual during their stay, as if time is accelerated.
Magnetic Anomaly: Compasses are said to behave erratically near the mountain.
Aerial Restrictions: Some legends claim that aircraft cannot fly over it, though this is more spiritual lore than documented fact.
In essence, Mount Kailash is far more than a mountain. It is a living temple, a beacon for millions of souls, and a profound symbol of the connection between the physical and the spiritual worlds. It stands as a testament to the power of faith, remaining untouched and unclimbed in a world where few such places remain.
Packing for the kora (trek)
Packing for the Mt. Kailash trek in Jun is an exercise in preparing for extremes. You will experience intense sun and surprising warmth during the day, followed by biting cold and potentially snowy conditions at night and on the high passes. The key is layering, and your 25-30L backpack is the perfect size to carry your essential "mobile comfort system" for the day.
The Backpack (25-30L)
This is your daily pack, carried by you while a support vehicle or porter transports your main luggage between the guesthouses. Its primary role is to hold your insulating layers, rain gear, water, and snacks for the day's walk. The sleeping bag is typically the bulkiest item, so a pack in this range is ideal for managing the rest.
Clothing: The Layering System
Your clothing strategy should be built around a versatile layering system that you can adapt throughout the day.
Base Layers (Moisture Management):
T-shirts (2x): Opt for quick-dry, moisture-wicking materials. Avoid cotton, as it will make you cold when wet from sweat or rain.
Inner/Yoga Pants (2x): Perfect as a base layer under your hiking pants on cold mornings or for sleeping in at night.
Underwear/Sports Bra (2x): Again, quick-dry fabric is essential.
Mid Layers (Insulation):
Middle Layer Down Jacket (1x): This is your crucial warmth layer. It will be on as soon as you stop for a break in the shade, and is essential for the evenings, mornings, and the ascent over the Drolma La Pass.
Jumpers (1x): A fleece or wool jumper can be a versatile alternative or addition to the down jacket.
Fleece Pant (1x): A game-changer for comfort. Wear them over your base layers in the guesthouses and while sleeping to stay warm in the unheated rooms.
Outer Layers (Protection):
Outer Pants (1x): A good pair of durable, weather-resistant hiking pants is your primary legwear.
Outer Layer Jacket (1x): A waterproof and windproof hard-shell jacket is non-negotiable for potential rain or snow showers.
Windbreaker (1x): A lightweight windbreaker is excellent for the lower, sunnier valleys where you need less bulk but still want protection from the wind.
Hand & Headwear:
Hat: A warm beanie for cold mornings and nights is essential.
Sunnies: High-quality sunglasses with UV protection are vital to prevent snow blindness, especially on the Drolma La Pass.
Gloves Inner & Shell: A thin liner glove for dexterity and a waterproof outer shell glove will protect your hands from the cold and wind on the pass.
Footwear: Your Most Important Asset
Hiking Boots (1x): Must be well-broken-in, waterproof, and with excellent ankle support. The terrain is rugged and involves crossing streams.
Thick Socks (1x) & Inner Socks (1x): A liner sock under a thick wool or synthetic hiking sock is the best combination to manage moisture and prevent blisters.
Health & Hydration
Water Bottle (300-700ml): A reusable bottle is sufficient. Stops with hot water are frequent (every 6km or so), allowing you to refill regularly. Staying hydrated is key to acclimatization.
Oxygen Can (1 or 2): Highly recommended for the ascent to the Drolma La Pass (5,636m). While you can buy them on the mountain, it's safer to bring your own to ensure availability. They provide a critical boost if you feel the effects of altitude.
First Aid Kit: Include blister treatment (Compeed), pain relievers, medication for altitude sickness (if prescribed), and any personal medications.
Sun Screen & Arm Sleeves: The sun at high altitude is intense. Use high-SPF sunscreen and consider lightweight arm sleeves for easy, constant protection without the mess of lotion.
Comfort & Extras
Headlamp/Torch: Essential for the pre-dawn start on the long pass day, and for navigating to the basic toilet facilities at night.
Towel: A quick-dry, lightweight travel towel is useful for wiping off sweat during the day's hike. There are no shower facilities on the mountain.
Mug, Coffee & Tea: A small treat that makes a big difference. A reusable insulated mug allows you to enjoy hot drinks at the tea stops, providing warmth and a morale boost.
Power Gel/Snacks: Bring high-energy snacks like nuts, banana, instant noodle, chocolate, or energy gels to consume while walking, helping to maintain your stamina between stops.

Parikrama)
